Basics on the ground

General, and worth verifying

Driving licence

An EU or EEA licence is accepted as it stands. Licences from outside that area are generally accepted for a limited period after arrival, often alongside a translation or an International Driving Permit, and rental desks apply their own stricter rules on top. Bring the physical card.

The airport is the market

A very large share of hires here start and end at the airport, from parking decks rather than a terminal kerb. Returning means finding the correct deck and level, and the signposted route out is not the fastest one — allow more time than the distance suggests, in both directions.

The fair calendar

Prices here track the exhibition calendar rather than the season. During a major fair the car and van fleet, the meeting rooms and the formalwear all tighten at once, and rates move to a different level. Book against the published hall calendar, not against the month.

Deposits

Standard car deposits are modest and held on a credit card in the driver's name. AV and exhibition equipment is contracted differently, usually with a corporate account or a deposit plus proof of insurance, and delivery windows are dictated by the hall rather than by you.

The low-emission zone

The city operates an environmental zone requiring a windscreen sticker. German-registered rental vehicles normally carry one; confirm it for anything brought in from outside the country.

Rooms by the hour

Meeting rooms, studios and desks let by the hour here in a way they do not in most German cities, and the terms are commercial rather than consumer: cancellation windows are short, and catering and AV are separate. Read what is included before comparing two hourly rates.

Licence categories, age limits and what may be taken out without a certificate change, and operators set stricter terms than the law requires. Treat everything above as orientation and confirm it with the operator and the local authority before you book.
